BIOGRAPHY: John Paul Thornton

John Paul Thornton's "Peace Prints" Project, created in conjunction with the Natural World Museum and Full Circle Learning for the United Nations Environmental Programme, was displayed at the Nobel Peace Prize Center in Oslo, Norway during the 2007 World Environmental Summit. Public exhibitions of his "Painting of Hope" project featuring hundreds of portraits depicting America's missing children have been held on the National Mall, at the White House and the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. John Paul has received honors from the California State Senate, The United States Congress and CBS television For his work linking art with social causes.

He attended Otis Parsons School of Design and California State University at Northridge, where he received his B.A. while working with two distinct voices in American art: abstract-expressionist Hans Burkhardt and classical painter Saul Bernstein, who helped pioneer the field of digital art. Extensive travels throughout France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Holland and Italy have given him the opportunity to study ancient and contemporary Western painting and aesthetics. Invitations to work and teach in Japan, Nepal and India have expanded his knowledge and application of the technical and cultural languages of art to include traditional Eastern modalities and their relationship to art-principals of the West.

Japan's Global Culture Center has invited John Paul to represent the United States in exhibitions in Tokyo, and Cairns, Australia. He has taught at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California State University of Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Unified School District Conservatory of the Arts, The Entertainment Arts Academy in Pasadena , Mission Renaissance Fine Art Academy and The Sophia School of Painting in Tokyo Japan. Current projects with the Department of Cultural Affairs also include international art exchanges with Mexico and Uganda. John Paul also serves as the President of the Valley Artists Guild, a non-profit organization benefiting professional painters and sculptors. Winner of many awards and grants, Thornton's paintings are in numerous private collections. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and daughter.
